Vietnam Itinerary: Where Should You Actually Go?
Vietnam is one of those countries where choosing where to go can be harder than deciding whether to visit.
The country stretches from Hanoi in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, with very different landscapes, cities, food, cultures and experiences along the way.
Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City can all offer something completely different.
The real question is:
How much time do you have — and what should you actually include?
After travelling to Vietnam six times, I would approach it differently depending on whether you have 5 days, 7 days, 2 weeks or 3 weeks.
If You Have 5 Days: Hanoi + Ha Long Bay
With only five days, I would keep the trip simple.
Hanoi
Start with Hanoi.
Give yourself time to walk around the Old Quarter, experience the streets, eat local food, visit cafés and simply see how the city works.
Don't treat Hanoi as somewhere you need to rush through just to tick off attractions.
Ha Long Bay
Then add Ha Long Bay.
A cruise gives you a completely different side of Vietnam, away from the busy streets of Hanoi.
With only five days, I would rather experience two places properly than spend most of the trip moving between airports, hotels and cities.
My 5-day approach
Hanoi → Ha Long Bay → Hanoi
Simple, practical and focused on the north.
If You Have 7 Days: Da Nang + Hoi An + Ho Chi Minh City
With seven days, I would look at a different combination.
Da Nang
Da Nang gives you a combination of city life, beaches and easy access to other experiences in central Vietnam.
It also works well as a base for exploring the region.
Hoi An
From Da Nang, Hoi An gives you a completely different atmosphere.
The old town, riverside setting, cafés, restaurants and surrounding countryside make it worth experiencing at a slower pace.
Ho Chi Minh City
I would then add a short stop in Ho Chi Minh City to get a taste of southern Vietnam.
This isn't enough time to explore the entire city or surrounding region.
The idea is simply to experience another side of Vietnam.
My 7-day approach
Da Nang → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City
This gives you a taste of central and southern Vietnam without trying to cover the entire country.
If You Have 2 Weeks: Connect North, Central & South Vietnam
Two weeks changes the equation.
Now you can start connecting several of Vietnam's major destinations.
My suggested route would be:
Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay → Da Nang → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City
Hanoi
Begin in Hanoi and experience the city rather than simply visiting a list of attractions.
Ninh Binh
Then travel to Ninh Binh for a completely different landscape.
The limestone scenery, rivers and surrounding countryside make it a natural contrast to Hanoi.
Ha Long Bay
Continue to Ha Long Bay before heading south.
Da Nang + Hoi An
Then move to central Vietnam.
Spend time in Da Nang and Hoi An, which offer a very different experience from the north.
Ho Chi Minh City
Finish in Ho Chi Minh City and experience the energy of Vietnam's largest southern metropolis.
This kind of north-to-south route is also reflected in official Vietnam Tourism itineraries, which combine destinations such as Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An/Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City over longer trips.
My 2-week approach
North → Central → South
Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay → Da Nang → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City
This is where Vietnam starts to feel like a complete journey rather than a single-city holiday.
If You Have 3 Weeks: See More, Rush Less
Three weeks gives you something even more valuable:
time.
I wouldn't necessarily add a huge number of extra destinations.
Instead, I would take the same basic route and slow it down.
Spend more time walking.
Eat locally.
Explore neighbourhoods.
Take day trips.
Sit in cafés.
Experience the streets.
And allow yourself to have days where you aren't rushing from one attraction to another.
The difference between a rushed itinerary and a slower journey isn't simply the number of places you see.
It's how much of each place you actually experience.
My 3-week approach
Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Ha Long Bay → Da Nang → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City
But with more time in each location and room for additional experiences.
So Which Vietnam Itinerary Is Best?
There isn't one answer.
It depends on how much time you have.
Time | My suggested route |
5 days | Hanoi + Ha Long Bay |
7 days | Da Nang + Hoi An + Ho Chi Minh City basics |
2 weeks | Hanoi + Ninh Binh + Ha Long Bay + Da Nang + Hoi An + Ho Chi Minh City or Vice Versa |
3 weeks | Same core route, but slower with more experiences and day trips. Can Add HUE & SAPA |
The important thing is not to confuse seeing more with experiencing more.
If you only have five days, don't try to squeeze the whole country into your itinerary.
If you have two weeks, you can start connecting the major regions.
And if you have three weeks, you have the luxury of slowing down.
Don't Just Collect Cities
Vietnam is not a country I would recommend experiencing entirely through a checklist.
The best memories can come from things that aren't necessarily the biggest attractions:
A street you discover while walking.
A local restaurant.
A café.
A conversation.
A neighbourhood.
A quiet afternoon.
That's what I mean by going beyond tourism.
The goal isn't just to say you've been to Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City.
The goal is to experience Vietnam.
And after six trips, that's the approach I would recommend.
